I think that people want three things more than anything else. These are: 1) to be respected, 2) to be desired and 3) to be envied. People want these things more than they want to be loved. This explains why we focus our lives on our careers and neglect relationships so that we can have the right possessions and live picture-perfect lives. And why we will let any old person into our life who makes us feel attractive and desirable.
